Brunt Ice Shelf: major calving promotes further speed-up

Two large icebergs have calved from Brunt Ice Shelf in recent years - A74 in February 2021 and A81 in January 2023. Many thought that would be the end of activity for years to come, but recent data shows that the remaining the ice shelf has continued to accelerate:

The animations below from the Copernicus Program Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar show the two calving events from Brunt Ice Shelf and reveal further fractures starting to open near the grounding line in recent weeks. These videos are free to download.

How this dynamic activity will unfold is unknown, but it could simply be a dynamic adjustment that will stabilise again as thicker ice grounds on the pinning point of the McDonald Ice Rumples.
